After a long winter put a damper on the U.S. economy in the first quarter, job growth is finally heating up.
“Spring arrived, and fortunately, so did the economic snapback,” said LPL Financial Research in its mid-year outlook report, released earlier this week.
Indeed, some 288,000 jobs were added in June, according to the Labor Department on Thursday, and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1%.
The markets, of course, reacted favorably to the latest job news. The Dow Jones moved towards 17,040 as the S&P 500 topped 1,980 ahead of the July Fourth holiday.
Analysts at LPL Financial (LPLA) say we’ve reached a moment of truth: “If the economic data continued to weaken, it would mean that something was more deeply wrong with the economy than merely the weather. If spring led to a rebound, then it meant the weakness in the first quarter was weather related, and our forecast for a breakout in the economy to a faster pace of growth was still on track.”

Opposition to the latest wireless rumored wireless merger might have come as a surprise to Sprint’s CEO/pitchman Daniel Hesse and Masayoshi Son, the head of Japan’s SoftBank (SFTBF), which acquired a controlling interest in Sprint for $1.9 billion last year. For one thing, it’s hard to imagine the new company posing much of a competitive threat. A combined Sprint/T-Mobile would have 53 million users — significantly greater than their individual parts, but still less than half the 110 million served by AT&T and the 120 million subscribers under the Verizon flag.

Those who place preorders through Apple are offered either free shipping or pickup at an Apple retail store. For those who don't want to play the online game, Apple stores are scheduled to begin selling the iPhone 6 at its physical stores at 8 a.m. Sept. 19. Complaints Expressed on Social Media Those trying to get the new phones took to social media to complain that even when they got on an order site that they found certain models and colors unavailable. It was something of an embarrassment for a technology company that was well aware of how many consumers clamor for its devices when they are first released. After the initial feverish burst of interest died down, Apple appeared to get things under control. At about 3 a.m. Pacific time, users reported the site was working and taking orders for all types of phones.
