Hot Supermarket Stocks To Watch For 2014

With natural and organic grocers sprouting up everywhere and giving both investors and shoppers a broad assortment of supermarket alternatives to choose from,Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFM  ) finds itself under increasing pressure to combat slowing sales growth.

Struggling to combat inroads that new entrants such as Sprouts Farmers Market (NASDAQ: SFM  ) are making on its turf, Whole Foods saw its same-store sales rise less than 6% in the organic grocer's fourth quarter, its slowest rate in nearly four years. In contrast, Sprouts saw pro forma comps surge 10% year over year, leading to a 24% increase in total sales from the year-ago period.

So to help keep them coming back for more, Whole Foods is now testing a discount loyalty card program -- the first time it has resorted to such tactics, and a recognition that despite offering a discounted line of private-label goods under its365 Everyday Value brand, the grocer has never really shaken the "Whole Paycheck"pejorativeit's been saddled with. The loyalty card, therefore, is designed to introduce shoppers to the store brand, though there are no plans to take it national just yet.

Despite growing expenses, in local currency terms, the bank's net income improved 16% year-over-year (yoy) while Non-Performing-Loans (NPL) have been kept below 4%. Hence, through Galicia, you can invest in an operationally healthy bank that shall behave in line with government bonds. Trading at 3 times P/E and 75% book value I think Galicia is good bet within the space.

    High Exposure to Public Debt

Banco Macro (BMA) has been one of the highest growing banks during the last two decades. One interesting thing about Banco Macro is that the bank owns approximately $400 million of government related securities when the bank's total market capitalization is now just above $1 billion. On the other hand, Banco Macro is growing earnings aggressively at a 39% year over year rate in local currency terms with a very low (and stable) 1.6% NPL rate. Banco Macro is slightly more expensive than Galicia trading at 80% its book value and 3.2 times P/E.

Top Gold Stocks To Buy Right Now

We've been recommending gold shares for months now, ever since prices collapsed in April. But timing's getting critical, because now the market is telling you gold is set to surge...

The first piece of evidence hit my radar on August 1st, moments after Barrick Gold released its $8.7 billion "news." (More on that in a minute.)

The Commitment of Traders report - perhaps the best leading indicator for gold prices - delivered the second piece of evidence: a staggering 70% spike in "red flag" futures trading. And the third and fourth pieces of evidence just arrived.

But before we look at each of these events in detail, here's what you need to know:

Any one of these indicators is bullish on its own. So when all four signals flash at once, please don't wait.

A "Gold Convergence" like this hasn't happened in 12 years...

Indicator No. 1: A True Bottom

Calling market bottoms - and tops, for that matter - is typically a 50/50 proposition... unless, of course, the market hands you an overwhelming element of proof, just like it did on August 1st...

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Doug Ehrman]

In terms of individual companies, there are several good choices, but these can behave very differently. Pan American Silver (NASDAQ: PAAS  ) , for example, missed revenue expectations and beat earnings expectations in its last earnings release. But despite the beat, EPS shrank considerably from a year earlier on a GAAP basis. The stock has been fairly flat ever since. Conversely, First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) reported strong revenue growth and a small bump in profits, sending the stock higher since the announcement. First Majestic reported increased cash costs and tightening margins, largely driven by lower silver prices. Each of these companies faces pressure from increasing production costs and environmental concerns.

It is no secret that precious metals companies have been taking a pounding for some time now. The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) and iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV  ) , the gold and silver ETFs, have been hard hit and operating companies like First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) and Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) have been hit even harder. Through all of these struggles, and in some cases because of them, one precious metals company continues to look attractive for the long term: Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) .

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

On that theory, hard-hit energy stocks that have suffered from the crash in oil prices could stand to benefit. Continental Resources (NYSE: CLR  ) , for instance, lost more than half its value in the last four months of 2014 as the exploration and production company with a huge stake in the Bakken shale play in North Dakota suffered from worries about the sustainability of its long-term growth in light of falling oil. Similarly, many small-cap gold and silver miners struggled through a poor 2014, and so companies like First Majestic Silver (NYSE: AG  ) and IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG  ) arguably have more to gain from a January bounce.

    Clash of the titans
When bears are raging on the gold bullion market, it's not surprising to see gold stocks getting mauled as well. Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS  ) was the biggest loser in the sector, losing a quarter of its market cap on no company-specific news, though a report last Friday indicated that a large number of hedge funds had recently dumped their positions in the mid-tier miner. Yet it wasn't all that much better among the majors, either, as Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) fell almost 13% and Kinross Gold (NYSE: KGC  ) was down 14%.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

We've seen the flip side of that trend play out in recent years, as rock-bottom interest rates in the U.S. have encouraged investment in higher-yielding income investments in places like Australia, Brazil, and South Africa. Interest from foreign investors got to be so extensive in Brazil that the federal government imposed a tax on foreign investors in bonds in order to curb demand and slow the pace of the Brazilian real's appreciation. Exchange-rate issues also likely played a role in the health of the commodities markets, as mining giants BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP  ) and Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO  ) in Australia benefited from increased demand largely for base metals. Similarly, South African gold miners AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE: AU  ) and Gold Fields (NYSE: GFI  ) outperformed rivals from elsewhere in the world, benefiting from strength in the South African rand currency.

Graham Ehm, Executive Vice President of South African-based AngloGold Ashanti Limited (NYSE: AU), one of the biggest gold producers in the global economy, stated the company is looking to save $500 million over the next 18 months, as capital expenditures will only be going towards their highest-quality assets. (Source: Mining Weekly, August 5, 2013.)

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] stion arises: Why is First Eagle bullish regarding such a company? The answer might lie in the huge discount at which the third-largest gold producer by output is trading, along with a certain degree of long-term optimism.

Huge Holdings Point to Long-Term Commitment

Since First Eagle recently increased its stake in Anglogold by more than 20%, bringing his total holding to over 32.5 million shares, I believe we are looking at a long-term investment. I am keen on pointing this out, since the stock is currently performing very poorly, and has already lost around 275% of its value year to date. Above average production costs and plummeting gold prices have put a huge deal of pressure on the gold miner, leading to very poor results. In addition, since many of its operations are in geopolitically risky countries such as Mali and the Democratic Republic of Congo, shareholders have been shedding this stock in large volumes.

Although Anglogold had a very rough year, and will continue to face elevated cash costs and reduced margins going into 2014, there are some positive signals looking forward. One of the most promising features, are the firm operations in South America and Australia, which are enjoying solid organic growth. Understanding the Organization Whose Sole Purpose Is to Bash Google

You don't become the dominant search engine in the world without picking up a few enemies along the way. That's why there's an organization whose sole purpose is to bash Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) -- an organization that's comprised and funded by many of its fiercest competitors.

FairSearch masquerades as a consumer watchdog, advocating for -- you guessed it -- fair search practices and innovation. However, it's pretty clear that FairSearch's primary objective is to hinder Google in every imaginable way, which in turn would inevitably benefit the rivals who foot FairSearch's bills.

The group was initially formed in 2010 by a handful of travel companies looking to defend themselves from Google stepping on their toes by adding flight-booking tools to its site. The search giant had just acquired flight information specialist ITA Software for $700 million, much to the chagrin of these companies.

There are 17 companies and organizations that are listed as members. Here are the more prominent names.

TripAdvisor Kayak  HotWire Expedia Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) Oracle (NYSE: ORCL  ) Nokia (NYSE: NOK  )

priceline.com is in the process of acquiring Kayak for $1.8 billion. Priceline has chosen not to join FairSearch thus far, but now it's acquiring a member. We'll have to wait to see if Priceline joins up or if Kayak drops out, or perhaps the parent and subsidiary will just agree to disagree.

The most recent attack was a complaint with the European Commission over the bundling of Google apps in Android. The group calls Google's distribution strategy "predatory" since it's technically free, which makes it difficult for other operating system providers to compete.

Of course, Microsoft is likely spearheading this move, since it hopes to charge license fees for Windows Phone, despite the fact that Microsoft gets its fair share of Android-related royalties. To the extent that Microsoft's ability to compete in mobile is hurt, so is Nokia's as the dominant maker of Windows Phones.

Oracle has also had its fair share of battles with Google, including its high-profile lawsuit over Android. Google has also been moving further into enterprise software. That's currently more of a direct threat toward Microsoft's enterprise offerings, but it still likely makes Oracle uncomfortable. Oracle and Nokia are among the newest members, joining last September.

FairSearch features a presentation on its site that includes out-of-context quotes from current and former Google execs, including Marissa Mayer, who has since moved to Yahoo!, that seemingly undermine its famous "Don't Be Evil" motto while displaying the inherent conflicts of interest that Google faces.

On one hand, any company that wields as much power as Google definitely needs oversight. On the other hand, that oversight shouldn't be originating from Google's biggest competitors who have every interest in seeing it fail.

As one of the most dominant Internet companies ever, Google has made a habit of driving strong returns for its shareholders. However, like many other web companies, it's also struggling to adapt to an increasingly mobile world. Despite gaining an enviable lead with its Android operating system, the market isn't sold. That's why it's more important than ever to understand each piece of Google's sprawling empire. In The Motley Fool's new premium research report on Google, we break down the risks and potential rewards for Google investors. Simply click here now to unlock your copy of this invaluable resource.

Top Quality Companies For 2014

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) and Joy Global (NYSE: JOY  ) have a problem: China. No, I'm not talking about the Chinese economy here, I am in fact talking about the quality of mining equipment being manufactured within China, which has drastically improved in recent years.

It used to be the case that mining companies, such as Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO  ) , would stay away from native mining equipment manufacturers within China as the kit was usually of an inferior quality, although the equipment was cheaper. However, now the Chinese companies are catching up. Indeed, according to comments from Rio Tinto CEO Sam Walsh given in an interview with the Wall Street Journal:

The Chinese manufacturers are reallyimprovingin this field and can now be compared to the major US manufacturers... funnily enough [on the rail cars] the quality actually was much higher [compared to the miner's traditional supplier]...Instead of spot welds, for example, on the sheet metal they were actually continuous welds.

Top 10 Cheapest Stocks For 2015: Market Vectors Steel ETF (SLX)

Market Vectors Steel ETF (the Fund) seeks to replicate as closely as possible the price and yield performance of the NYSE Arca Steel Index (STEEL or the Index) by investing in a portfolio of securities that generally replicates STEEL. STEEL, calculated by the NYSE Alternext, is a modified market capitalization-weighted index consisting of publicly traded companies predominantly involved in the production of steel products or mining and processing of iron ore. The Index includes companies primarily involved in a variety of activities related to steel production, including the operation of manufacturing mills and fabrication of steel products. Companies eligible for inclusion in Index should be engaged in solar power and related products and services, deriving at least 66% of revenues from it with market cap exceeding $100 million, and should have three-month trading volume equal to or greater than $1 million per day. Its investment advisor is Van Eck Associates Corporation. Advisors' Opinion:

On Monday, Goldman Sachs upgraded the whole steel sector from Cautious to Neutral and specifically upgraded small cap and mid cap steel stocks AK Steel Holding Corporation (NYSE: AKS), United States Steel Corporation (NYSE: X) and Steel Dynamics Inc. (NASDAQ: STLD) to Buy with price targets of $6, $30 and $22, respectively, but should you go for one of these individual steel stocks or for the Market Vectors Steel ETF (NYSEARCA: SLX)? To begin with, Goldman Sachs says that thesupply-demand fundamentals for steel are starting to look more appealing as some supply has been taken out plus they have a very bearish view on input costs (as in iron ore)which bodes well for steel producers in the long run. Moreover, recently filed trade cases could provide some tailwindif they are successful.Of course a rising tide can lift all ships, but Goldman Sachs suggests that you go for the followingsmall cap or mid cap steel stocks:

In our late October report on X, we noted the Company was “scratching the surface” on operational improvement, and we expected shares to edge higher over the near term. While X shares have appreciated by 16% since that report vs. the S&P 500 of +4% and the [Market Vectors Steel ETF (SLX)] of +3%, we believe shares have more room to run based on our positive carbon hot-rolled steel pricing revisions for 2014: meaningful raw material cost tailwinds (coal, scrap, iron ore); low Street EPS and EBITDA expectations for 2014-2015; an ever-increasing interest rate environment (benefits for pension exposure); more evidence of European macro stability; and above-average likelihood of incremental operational efficiency announcements such as a joint venture or tolling agreement with Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI).

Advisors' Opinion:

This small-cap media company operates three popular television networks in Russia, but that’s not all CTC Media (CTCM) has going for it. Billionaire owner Yury Kovalchuk is a longtime pal of President Vladimir Putin. That’s important in a country as, er, mercurial as Russia.

SP500 Completing the Arc into Target Levels

I've been highlighting this "Arc" or "Mirror Image" Pattern in the S&P 500 and US Stock market to members as it developed, but let's take a look at the pattern as it nears completion.

Here's the S&P 500 "Arc" or "Mirror Image Foldback" Pattern in currently motion:

A "Mirror Image Foldback" Price Pattern is a lesser-known event where a clear symmetrical image develops.

It looks like an "arc" or a rise on the left side of the grid with a similar fall on the right side of the grid.

[Related -Strong Attractor in Action Pulling S&P 500 Down]

In other words, the "future projection" on the right (which has almost completed) will be very similar to the preceding pathway on the left.

Like anything, if you want clues to the future, simply look to the past.

The focal point now will be where the market bounced off the 2,015 level, though we currently trade under the pivot support.

A failure to hold this level simply suggests a fall down further toward 2,000 (psychological target) and perhaps the 1,980 level.

Develop your trades based on the support or breakdown (failure) of this level.

We can see a similar Foldback Pattern in all four US Equity Indexes (seen using Futures Contracts):

The Foldback Pattern – a pathway to the future directly from the past – doesn't occur often, so be sure to use this current example as a key reference for the set-up and follow-through of the event.

With the stock market reaching all-time record highs (S&P 500: 1900), you would think there would be a lot of cheers, high-fiving, and back slapping. Instead, investors are ignoring the sunny, blue skies and taking off their rose-colored glasses. Rather than securely sleeping like a baby (or relaxing during a three-day weekend) with their investment accounts, people are biting their fingernails with clenched teeth, while searching for a market boogeyman in their closets or under their beds.If you dont believe me, all you have to do is pick up the paper, turn on the TV, or walk over to the office water cooler. An avalanche of scary headlines that are spooking investors include geopolitical concerns in Ukraine & Thailand, slowing housing statistics, bearish hedge fund managers (i.e., Tepper Einhorn, Cooperman), declining interest rates, and collapsing internet stocks. In other words, investors are looking for things to worry about, despite record corporate profit s and stock prices. Peter Lynch, the manager of the Magellan Fund that posted +2,700% in gains from 1977-1990, put short-term stock price volatility into perspective:You shouldnt worry about it. You should worry what are stocks goin! g to be 10 years from now, 20 years from now, 30 years from now.Rather than focusing on immediate stock market volatility and other factors out of your control, why not prioritize your time on things you can control. What investors can control is their asset allocation and spending levels (budget), subject to their personal time horizons and risk tolerances. Circumstances always change, but if people spent half the time on investing that they devoted to planning holiday vacations, purchasing a car, or choosing a school for their child, then retirement would be a lot less stressful. After realizing 99% of all the short-term news is nonsensical noise, the next important realization is stocks are volatile securities, which frequently go down -10 to -20%. As much

Top Performing Stocks To Watch For 2014

Three hours into the trading day, Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) is keeping its head above water, but that's about it: The superbank is up 0.35% after opening down 0.06%. Wells is underperforming its Big Four banking peers and the broader markets today, despite some good news from the New York State's Attorney General's office delivered on Saturday. What gives?

A second chance
The Seattle Times is reporting that neither Wells Fargo nor Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) will have to face an enforcement action from Eric Schneiderman's bank-busting AG's office. This past May, Schneiderman had leveled charges against the two superbanks, claiming that both had violated a 2012 mortgage-servicing settlement designed to "fix violations and remediate harm to [home] borrowers."

According to the settlement's monitoring committee, the new oversight process for Wells and B of A "will be the most efficient path to improving services [and] will bring about those reforms more quickly than protracted litigation on these particular issues."

So why has this relatively unknown small cap storage stock been a better performer than its better known storage stock peers?

The company was founded in 1977 and is based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Up first is Extra Space Storage (EXR), a $5 billion self-storage facility owner. EXR has posted strong performance for 2013, rallying close to 19% since the calendar flipped over to January. That's more or less on par with the performance of the S&P, but it's a whole lot stronger than most REITs. That outsized relative strength looks ready to carry over to the second half of the year.

That's because EXR is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a price setup that's formed by a horizontal resistance level to the upside and uptrending support to the downside. Essentially, as shares of EXR bounce in between those two technical levels, they're getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above resistance -- at $45 in this case. When that breakout happens, traders have a buy signal in shares.

EXR's pattern isn't exactly textbook, but that doesn't change the trading implications in this stock. Momentum adds some extra confidence to EXR's ability to break out; 14-day RSI turned bullish just last week. After EXR clears $45, keep a tight protective stop in place.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

In terms of specific company upside/downside payoffs, we believe that [Brookfield Residential Properties (BRP)], [KB Home], and [PulteGroup] offer above-average payoffs. We note that more than half of [Brookfield Residential Properties'] earnings are derived from Canada, dampening EPS sensitivity to our assumptions regarding the pace of the U.S. housing recovery. We believe that [KB Home] will achieve sharply improved operating performance, which should drive robust EPS growth given the company comparatively high degree of financial leverage. We also have a high degree of confidence that[PulteGroup] will continue to successfully execute against its goal of improving ROIC performance, which should act as a catalyst for share price appreciation.

Bringing Home the Bacon If you really want to pay back mom for all she's done, get ready to pony up big. A card and some carnations (the official flower of Mother's Day, who knew?) just won't cut it. Michael Kors: Shopping in the Discount Bin

It's been a tough couple days for clothing and accessories retailer Michael Kors (KORS).

F. Martin Ramin/The Wall Street Journal

With shares falling 5% on investor fears of soft demand, and Macy's (M) discounting a sizeable portion of its Michael Kors inventory, it was time for someone–anyone–to step up and say something. So Morgan Stanley’s Kimberly Greenberger did by calling Kors current situation “a buying opportunity.” She explains why, as she attempts to talk Kors investors down from the proverbial ledge:

We think the incremental promotions reflect a combination of some normalization and less commercial product execution in the camouflage collection, not brand decay as the stock reaction would suggest…We see a clear path to over $7 billion in revenue and $6 earnings power by calendar 2017.

Greenberger’s enthusiasm, however, hasn't quite resonated with investors just yet, but shares are little changed at $71.38 at 3:19 p.m. On a day when the S&P 500 has fallen 1.4%, that’s none too shabby.

Hot Prefered Companies To Buy Right Now: Impac Mortgage Holdings Inc (IMH)

Impac Mortgage Holdings, Inc. (IMH), incorporated in August 1995, operations include the mortgage and real estate fee-based business activities conducted by its subsidiaries: Integrated Real Estate Service Corporation (IRES), IMH Assets Corp. (IMH Assets) and Impac Funding Corporation (IFC). The Company operations include the mortgage and real estate fee-based business activities conducted by IRES and the long-term mortgage portfolio (residual interests in securitizations reflected as net trust assets and liabilities in the consolidated balance sheets. The mortgage lending activities include the origination, funding, selling and servicing of loans. The Company is focusing on originating loans eligible for sale to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and government sponsored loans eligible for Ginnie Mae securities issuance.

Mortgage and real estate services

The Company created IRES to provide solutions to the mortgage and real estate markets. IRES performs services for investors, portfolio managers, servicers and individual borrowers, including mortgage lending services, portfolio monitoring and real estate services, surveillance and recovery services. The platform includes the mortgage lending operations, the portfolio loss mitigation and real estate services and formerly the title and escrow operations. The mortgage lending activities include the origination, funding, selling and servicing of loans. The Company is focusing on originating loans eligible for sale to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and government sponsored loans eligible for Ginnie Mae securities issuance.

Master Servicing

In the ordinary course of business, the Company sells mortgage loans to the secondary market. The Company retains servicing on certain loans sold and earns servicing fees generally between 0.25% and 0.44% per annum of the monthly outstanding principal balance of the loans serviced. The Company has hired a nationally recognized residential sub-servicer to sub-service! the servicing portfolio. Although the Company uses a sub-servicer to provide primary servicing and certain default servicing functions, the Company's default management team, experienced in loss mitigation and real estate recovery, monitors and surveys the performance of the mortgage servicing portfolio. Incurring the cost of both a sub-servicer and an internal default management team reduces net servicing income, but it is an important investment used to minimize delinquencies and minimize repurchase risk. As of December 31, 2011, the total unpaid principal balance of mortgage loans serviced was $605.4 million.

Long-Term Mortgage Portfolio

The long-term mortgage portfolio consists of the residual interest in securitizations represented on the consolidated balance sheet as the difference between trust assets and trust liabilities. The long-term mortgage portfolio includes adjustable rate and fixed rate Alt-A single-family residential mortgages and commercial (primarily multifamily residential loans) mortgages that were acquired and originated by the Company. Alt-A mortgages are primarily first lien mortgages made to borrowers whose credit is within typical Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac guidelines, but have loan characteristics that make them non-conforming under those guidelines. Commercial mortgages in the long-term mortgage portfolio are adjustable rate mortgages with initial fixed interest rate periods of two-, three-, five-, seven- and 10-years that subsequently convert to adjustable rate mortgages (hybrid ARMs).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another stock that insiders are active in here is Impac Mortgage (IMH), which offers residential mortgage services in the U.S. Insiders are buying this stock into big time weakness, since shares are off by 27.4% so far in 2013.

Impac Mortgage has a market cap of $89 million and an enterprise value of $6.05 billion. This stock trades at a premium valuation, with a forward price-to-earnings of 124.10. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $14.15 million and its total debt is a whopping $5.98 billion.

A beneficial owner just bought 77,863 shares, or about $782,000 worth of stock, at $10 to $10.05 per share.

From a technical perspective, IMH is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock has been trending sideways in a consolidation pattern for the last month, with shares moving between $9.80 on the downside and $10.90 on the upside. A high-volume move above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern soon could trigger a big breakout trade for shares of IMH.

If you're bullish on IMH, then look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above some key near-term support at $9.80 and then once it breaks out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $10.50 to $10.90 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average volume of 29,759 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then IMH will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $11.88 to $11.95. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give IMH a chance to tag $14.
