Stocks to Watch: Whirlpool, PepsiCo, Dow Chemical

Among the companies with shares expected to actively trade in Wednesday’s session are Whirlpool Corp.(WHR), PepsiCo Inc.(PEP) and Dow Chemical Co.(DOW)

Whirlpool’s second-quarter profit fell 9.6% and results missed analysts’ expectations by a wide margin, as international operations experienced weak sales. The company also reduced its full-year adjusted earnings outlook. Shares fell 4.7% to $136.50 premarket.

PepsiCo said its second-quarter revenue rose, helped by higher beverage and snack volumes, as it increased its earnings outlook for the year. Shares rose 2.1% to $91 premarket.

Dow Chemical said its second-quarter earnings fell 60% on higher sales costs and an unfavorable comparison with the year-earlier period, though results beat market expectations. Shares gained 1.4% to $53.01 premarket.

Biogen Idec Inc.(BIIB) said robust sales of its multiple-sclerosis treatments helped drive up earnings by 46% in the second quarter. Shares jumped 7.4% to $326 premarket.

Boeing Co.(BA) boosted its earnings guidance for the year as its second-quarter earnings climbed 52%, buoyed by continued strong demand for the aerospace giant’s jetliners. Shares fell slightly to $129.50 premarket.

Northrop Grumman Corp.(NOC) reported a 4.7% increase in second-quarter profit as the defense contractor cut costs, masking a decrease in sales. The company also boosted its earnings outlook for the year. Shares were inactive premarket.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.'s(TMO) second-quarter revenue jumped 33% and its adjusted profit rose as the company benefited from its recent acquisition of Life Technologies. The company also raised its full-year per-share earnings estimate. Shares gained 2.4% to $125.97 premarket.

General Dynamics Corp.'s(GD) second-quarter earnings slipped as the company recorded sales declines in three of its four business units, including its Gulfstream business-jet unit. Shares edged up slightly to $119 premarket.

Air Products & Chemicals Inc.(APD) said its fiscal third-quarter profit rose 8.9% on stronger revenue, boosted by higher volumes across all business segments. The company also narrowed its earnings outlook for the fiscal year. Shares were inactive premarket.

Praxair Inc.'s(PX) second-quarter earnings grew nearly 5% as new projects in North America and Asia helped drive overall sales growth, but the company sounded a cautious tone for the remainder of the year. Shares were inactive premarket.

EMC Corp.(EMC) said its second-quarter earnings fell 16% as an increase in revenue was offset by rising costs. The company raised its adjusted earnings view for 2014 by one cent a share. Shares edged up slightly to $28.56 premarket.

Delta Air Lines Inc.(DAL) said its second-quarter earnings jumped 17%, driven by higher passenger and operating revenue as traffic increased. Shares were up 1.5% to $38.25 premarket.

Norfolk Southern Corp.(NSC) said its second-quarter earnings rose 21% on broad revenue growth, including a rebound in coal shipments. Shares ticked up slightly to $108.43 premarket.

Puma Biotechnology Inc.(PBYI) said its investigational breast-cancer treatment showed a 33% improvement in disease-free survival over a placebo in a Phase 3 study. Share surged 271% to $218 premarket.

Xilinx Inc.(XLNX) reported that revenue rose 5.8% in its fiscal first quarter, but it missed expectations as the chip maker was hit by weaker-than-anticipated sales in its defense and wireless businesses. Shares fell 13% to $41.90 premarket.
