Top Energy Companies For 2014

Roaring Lion Energy Drink / Facebook Regardless of whether you're focused on saving money or saving your health, the beverage section of your local convenience store is packed with pitfalls. Sodas loaded with high-fructose corn syrup sit a few feet away from pricey energy drinks and coffees loaded with fat. The cheap drinks are bad for you, the healthier drinks are expensive, and you don't have much chance of finding something exciting or new. Luckily, there's another option. Asian markets offer a wide selection of teas, sodas and juices that will challenge your taste buds without hurting your wallet. And, if you're in the mood for something new, but aren't feeling too adventurous, never fear: I've included a list of a few of my favorites. One warning, though: I bought all of these items in stores in New York City, which means that I probably paid a lot more than in your neighborhood convenience store or Asian grocery.

Surprisingly, our energy boom could help China, but not in the way you might think. The energy sector in the U.S. has been an incubator for innovative drilling techniques and technologies over the past few years. Now we have a near monopoly on the technology. Like the U.S., China has massive shale gas deposits, and the technology we possess could help them develop domestic sources and allow them to become more energy self-sufficient. We're starting to see it happen. Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-A  ) has signed a deal with PetroChina (NYSE: PTR  ) to spend $1 billion a year to develop shale resources there. Also, frackingspecialistsHaliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) are partnering with various Chinese companies to supply the country with hydraulic fracturing equipment and specialty fluids.

The auction news isn't good for investors in Brazil's Petrobras (PBR), but it could well be a boon for China and Chinese oil companies such as PetroChina (PTR) and CNOOC (CEO).

The final two big gainers didn't have any company specific news that sent them rocketing higher today, but instead, relied on a very big rally in natural gas for their ascent. Following yesterday's data, which showed a 94-billion cubic foot reduction in natural gas inventories, spot natural gas prices jumped higher by better than 4%. That was enough of a propellant to send natural gas-heavy independent E&P companies like Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG  ) and WPX Energy (NYSE: WPX  ) higher by 5.1% and 5.2%, respectively.

    Transformational acquisition is closing soon
Earlier this year, LinnCo, in conjunction with LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) announced the game-changing deal for Berry Petroleum (NYSE: BRY  ) . The $4.3 billion deal, which is being delayed slightly, is still expected to close in the third quarter. Once it does, the fundamentals of LINN and by extension LinnCo will improve dramatically. Not only that but both companies will be boosting their respective investor payouts as well as shifting those payouts to a monthly schedule.

So yes, the numbers were good enough to make Raymond James’ analyst Kevin Smith say that Linn “has finally turned the corner.” But even bullish analysts note that the numbers are kind of, well, beside the point until Linn’s merger with Berry Petroleum (BRY) is resolved. RBC Capital Markets analyst John Ragozzino and team explain:

Yes, there are still more than two hours left in the day, but it’s New Year’s Eve and unless something crazy happens these five stocks look to be the worst of the worst in the S&P 500 in 2013. So let’s raise a big hand for Newmont Mining (NEM), Cliff’s Natural Resources (CLF) Edwards Lifesciences (EW), Peabody Energy (BTU) and Teradata (TDC).

    Cold like coal
Similar trends pushed coal producer Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) down 45%. Coal producers have faced a number of challenges lately. Low natural-gas prices have made coal less desirable as a fuel for power production and other bulk needs, and an adverse regulatory environment in the U.S. has pushed most coal producers to turn to the export markets as their best source of potential demand. Yet as China's economy has slowed, Peabody in particular reaps less benefit from its strategically located reserves in Western Australia. Unless natural gas recovers all of its losses and makes coal more attractive, Peabody could continue to see pressure.
