Thanksgiving online sales may have gone above $1 billion for the first time. Walmart (NYSE: WMT) may have had record-breaking Black Friday sales. But, the big Thanksgiving holiday weekend has ended, and the marathon to December 31 has begun. It is over the next thirty days, that the winners in holiday sales will be determined.
One of the biggest questions about Thanksgiving and Black Friday is whether they pull sales which would have been made in December. If so, and holiday sales are a zero sum game, December may be disappointing for most retailers. If consumers have not satisfied their appetite for purchases and have more money in reserve, many large bricks and mortar retailers and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) have chance to post the kinds of improvement which have rarely been hit since the start of the recession.
Among the biggest problems large retailers have now is what they can give to shoppers. Companies like Walmart have already offered deals which are likely as good as they could offer. Smart consumers get to sit back and wait to see if retailers who have excess inventory will drop prices in mid-December to empty their shelves and warehouses.

Besides this, I would also avoid companies which had previously fooled investors by using things such as "creative accounting" or "aggressive accounting" (Remember Enron); had been involved in a scandal which required it to restate past financials or go to court with shareholders (Remember the Diamond Foods (DMND) scam); was unable to produce financial statements on time [One recent case being World Acceptance (WRLD)]; or was being investigated by the SEC. These are all some signs of management being dishonest, and I would rather avoid companies with such a history, unless there is a change in the company's management team.

Despite Nintendo's price cuts and rich lineup of titles, such as the latest entry to its Super Mario Bros.franchise, the company will sell even fewer Wii U's in the console's second full year of sales. Nintendo's rivals,Sony (NYSE: SNE ) and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) are doing much better, further adding to the company's woes.

Nike's Fuelband line should also give it a foothold in the global "wearables" market for consumer electronics, which is expected to grow to $20 billion in global sales by 2017. However, Sony's (NYSE: SNE ) SmartWatch and Samsung's voice-activated Galaxy Gear could threaten Nike's Fuelband should adequate fitness apps emerge for these devices. Nike does retain a pricing advantage over Under Armour's Armour39 chest strap and watch, which are being sold at higher prices. Fool contributor Andres Cardenal notes that Under Armour's recent acquisition of MapMyFitness might help it better compete head-to-head with Nike in social-fitness gadgets.

Traditional grocers such as Kroger Co (KR) and Delhaize Group SA (DEG) are having an increasingly hard time dealing with competition from nontraditional grocers. Both of these firms have tried to adapt to the pressure stemming from rival discounters, with varying degrees of success. Whereas Kroger has been able to utilize its scale to leverage fixed costs, Delhaize has struggled to maintain margins, and is being forced to lower prices.
Fending off competitors Investment gurus John Hussman of Hussman Economtrics Advisors and Joel Greenblatt of Gotham Capital own considerable positions in Kroger, one of the largest retailers in the U.S. The firm currently operates over 2,400 supermarkets, 750 convenience stores, and 325 jewellery stores across 31 states. Shareholders have reason to be optimistic, as the company recently acquired Harris Teeter Supermarkets Inc (HTSI). The $2.44 billion deal means Kroger will be looking at an 8% increase in its store base and a 4% boost in revenue.
