Top Recreation Companies For 2014

Sports are not merely recreational but educational — at least according to Research Affiliates equity analysts who derive some insights into successful investing in their current newsletter.

At issue is the allure of “quality” investing, an attractive proposition to finance academics and practitioners alike, albeit one that is ill defined.

Vitali Kalesnik and Engin Kose, two analysts with the Newport Beach, Calif., investment research firm known for its fundamentally weighted indexes, decided to test the idea that a premium can be obtained through quality investing.

But reviewing the approaches found among both academics and investment managers, they identified 10 different definitions of quality, including profitability, margins, growth in profitability, growth in margins, leverage, financial constraints and distress, earnings stability, net payout/issuance, growth activities and accounting quality.

All have something generally to do with profitability, but in any event the duo tested all the various expressions of quality and found them to be unreliable predictors of investment performance.

Manchester United (MANU), together with its subsidiaries, is engaged in the ownership and operation of Manchester United Football Club, a professional football club in the United Kingdom. This stock closed up 4.1% to $17.50 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 973,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 48,028

    Volume % Change: 1099%

From a technical perspective, MANU surged sharply higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $16.87 with monster upside volume. This spike higher on Monday pushed shares of MANU into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $17 to $17.34. Market players should now look for a continuation move higher in the short-term if MANU manages to take out Monday's intraday high of $17.50 with strong upside volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MANU as long as it's trending above Monday's low of $16.80 and then once it sustains a move or close above $17.50 with volume that hits near or above 48,028 shares. If that move starts soon, then MANU will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $18.48 to its 52-week high of $19.

Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty Images From a new player in the fast food market cleverly attacking the leader's mascot to a social giant bringing out its inner shutterbug, here's a rundown of the week's smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. Twitter (TWTR) -- Winner There are limitations inherent with Twitter, and the 140-character cutoff is just scratching the surface. Twitter's had its monetization challenges because it's not as interactive with multimedia, but that's taking a step in the right direction this week with the hashtag hasher sprucing up its offerings for shutterbugs. Twitter will now allow Twitter users to tag fellow users in photographs. Twitter will also let someone include as many as four photographs in a single post. We live in visual times, and while Vine and Twitter's original photo platform are decent, it's great to see the dot-com darling take things up a notch. King Digital Entertainment (KING) -- Loser There are tens of millions of Candy Crush Saga players on any given day, but apparently most of them would rather be matching candy pieces than buying into the game's developer. Game creator King Digital Entertainment went public at $22.50 on Wednesday, and unlike many of the dot-com darlings that have pulled off blazing IPOs, the market spat the Candy Crush maker out. The stock opened lower and closed its first day of trading down 16 percent, at $19. It was easy to see this coming. Many key performance metrics had peaked at King during last year's third quarter. Oculus -- Winner Few figured that Facebook (FB) would rush into any big-ticket purchases after its $19 billion deal for Whatsapp, but then the social networking leader announced the purchase of Oculus for $2 billion. Oculus is a virtual reality headwear maker that started drawing attention as a Kickstarter campaign. Critics have pointed out that the backers of that crowdfunding campaign that raised $2.5 million on Kickstarter will get nothing out of this deal.

www.sixflags.com Summer is the peak season for enjoying thrill rides and family-friendly attractions at amusement and theme parks. Summer may also be a good time to approach these havens of coasters and cotton candy as investing ideas. Let's go over a few reasons why the fundamentals are strong for the industry. 1. Big Thrills Add Up to Big Yields Six Flags (SIX) and Cedar Fair (FUN) -- the country's two largest regional amusement park operators -- combined to entertain 49.6 million guests last year, and 80 percent of those visits came between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Many publicly traded amusement park operators pay out hefty quarterly distributions. Cedar Fair can get the credit for that pocket-happy trend. It's organized as a limited partnership, distributing most of its income to its stakeholders. Cedar Fair units currently yield 5.3 percent. When Six Flags returned as a public company four years ago, it decided to also declare beefy dividends. It now yields a healthy 4.5 percent. Even marine life park operator SeaWorld (SEAS) decided to ride the wave when it went public in last year. Its stock packs a 2.8 percent yield. Leading theme park operators Disney (DIS) and Universal Studios parent Comcast (CMCSK) aren't as generous with their payouts, with yields of 1 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively. 2. Parks are Making Big Investments for the Future Gated attractions aren't hesitating to make big investments that will pay off in the coming years. Just a few days ago, Indiana's Holiday World announced that it will spend $22 million for an ambitious expansion next summer that includes the country's first launched wing coaster. If a small yet critically acclaimed family-owned park can justify that kind of investment, one can only imagine what the larger operators will do. Universal Orlando has made a nine-figure investment this summer in its bar-raising Diagon Alley expansion. Despite some operating hiccups with the Harry Potter-themed area's flagshi

Mel Evans/AP From a media giant growing its reach through rental cars to a beleaguered theme park operator warning of even slower turnstile clicks, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst from the business world. Microsoft (MSFT) -- Winner Many argued that Microsoft deciding late last month to offer up its flagship Microsoft Office suite of productivity software for iPads was too little, too late. Folks had already moved on to free or nearly free alternatives, and Microsoft was already suffering with a global slump in PC sales. Well, Microsoft still has plenty of bite. It announced there were 12 million downloads of its Word, Excel and PowerPoint iPad apps in its first week of availability. Barnes & Noble (BKS) -- Loser It's not just bookworms checking out of Barnes & Noble. Liberty Media (LMCA) is selling 90 percent of its shares of the struggling bookstore operator, taking its stake of 17 percent down to less than 2 percent. Liberty Media will give up the right to appoint a pair of board members now that it's a shrinking investor, but that seems to be a small price to pay for an investor that wants to deploy that money somewhere else. Running a book superstore isn't easy these days. Barnes & Noble's sales have been sluggish as readers go digital, and the chain's push to cash in on the trend with its own Nook line is fading fast. Sirius XM Radio (SIRI) -- Winner Satellite radio will be easier to tune into in rental cars. Avis Budget Group (CAR) revealed this week that in-dash Sirius XM receivers are now available in more than 60 percent of its Avis and Budget car rental agencies. Avis Budget previously relied on portable plug-and-play receivers that renters could order at the counter. Drivers will still have to pay for access. There's no free lunch even if it's a prepaid rental. However, it's still a good way for Sirius XM to expand brand awareness and ideally hook future subscribers. Shares of SeaWorld Entertainment (SEAS) have dropped 3.6% to $35.02 today after the company missed profit and revenue forecasts.

    REUTERS

The operator of SeaWorld and Busch Gardens reported a profit of 41 cents a share, below forecasts of 47 cents. Sales fell 3% to $411.3 million, below estimates for $435.5 million. The company blamed bad weather and the “unfavorable timing of Easter” for the miss.

Maquarie’sTim Nollen andSunny Kwak also note that this is SeaWorld, new to the earnings game, isn’t managing its numbers for quarterly reports:

We believe this management team knows its company and industry and doesn necessarily manage to the quarter, so while Q2 looksdisappointing we look to a recovery in H2. Based on the numbers then, SEAS trading down ~11% after-hours looks overdone to us, rendering this a good entry point. SEAS at 10.1x 2014 EV/EBITDA trades below peers like SIX at 10.6x.

Lazard Capital Market’s Barton Crockett also sees the rest a pickup during the second half of 2013:

Weather so far in 3Q13 seems fine, and SeaWorld will have a full quarter of the new Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin exhibit that opened May 24. So there appears to be upside potential in the seasonally small 4Q13, with guidance implying a 21% decline in adj. EBITDA to $51M… SeaWorld is up 36% from the $27 IPO, trading at 10.9x 2013E adj. EBITDA and a free cash flow yield near 7%. The potential for lowered expectations and valuation Wednesday could make the shares more interesting.

JPMorgan’s Alexia Quadrani and team agree that the second half “looks more promising.” They are, however, worried about valuation. They write:

Management indicated that it willing to push through price increases at the expense of some deterioration in attendance to help drive per cap revenues. The 2H,13 is positioned to benefit from these earlier price lifts and a potential uplift in a

Twitter currently trades at a Last Twelve Months (LTM) Price to Sales (PS) ratio of 27, which translates to astronomical valuations. Consider a comparison with Facebook which generates about 10 times the revenue and still grows at a healthy 60 odd percent. Facebook trades at an LTM PS multiple of 19. Here one should note that Facebook also delivered a net profit margin of 27% in Q2 vs Twitter's loss margin of 46% and has nearly 5 times Twitter's active users.
